Get your Micronutrients!

Just finished watching the documentary "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" which advocates juicing and eating lots of micronutrients, found in vegetables and fruits. It is really inspiring me to buy a juicer...

Here's a trailer for the movie:

Here's how to make the green juice:

What alcohol beverages have no grain

Alcohol tends to be one of those things you should only have in limited quantities on the Paleo diet. Recently I was wondering what some of the best options might be when you do decide to have a drink and want to stay true to your Paleo "roots."

I found this site that tells what alcohol beverages have no grain: http://www.ehow.com/list_6880253_alcohol-beverages-grain_.html

The list includes:
1. Wine (made from grapes)
2. Hard cider (made from apples)
3. Rum (made from sugar cane)
4. Brandy (made from fruit)

12 Vegetables that are a good source of calcium (so you don't have to worry about not eating dairy)

I've heard that people get concerned about not eating/drinking dairy because they are scared that they will not get enough calcium. In his new book, Dr. Cordain goes into a fair amount of detail about why dairy is actually not a good source of calcium (mainly because the Magnesium in cow's milk inhibits its utilization by our bodies). So I decided to look up what other foods are a good source of calcium.

This site is the first one that came up on google, and lays it out very simply: http://www.fitday.com/fitness-articles/nutrition/healthy-eating/12-vegetables-high-in-calcium.html

Besides soybeans, the top five foods on the list are:
1. Okra
2. Almonds
3. Collard greens
4. Oranges
5. Spinach

The Paleo Answer

Dr. Cordain just put out a new book called The Paleo Answer. So far I have made it to chapter 6...I stayed up until 2am last night reading the "Just say no to the milk mustache" chapter! I am so fired up about how the US government recommends cows milk as part of a "balanced diet" when it is so detrimental to everyone's health!

Cordain lays out the science of how dairy (cow's milk) causes heart disease, insulin resistance, acne, type 1 diabetes, breast, ovarian and prostate cancer, colic (in babies), asthma, excessive mucus production, Parkinson's disease, cataract formation, impaired iron and zinc absorption, and risk for hip fracture. I've definitely found this to be true in my experience!
